Start a New Habit

New Year's Resolutions. It's that time of year again...the time when you and I are promising to stop one of those annoying habits. The habits that our friends and families have learned to hate. We all say that we'll stop them, some of us even follow through - to some extent anyway. How many of you actually continued the whole entire resolution throughout 1997? Ok...I'll admit I didn't keep my resolution to get away with my wife...alone...just the two of us for a vacation. Usually the resolutions we make last about a couple weeks, and even that's pushing it..like my intention to not pull all the covers over to my side of the bed. Often, we partially follow the resolutions by not doing these habits in public, but then continuing them behind closed doors or under the covers..like me.

Up until now New years has been about stopping bad habits. Why not start a new one? Don't tell me how stupid this sounds, cause I know already.

I think that the most common resolutions revolve around our body image and health - namely, we all want to lose weight and live happily ever after. Then there's the trivial stuff, like making more money, meeting a life-mate, and cleaning up the hall closet.

How many times have I heard a friend say they wanna quit smoking or stop eating chocolate? What about all those nail-biters I've come across? And believe me, I have observed with many patients what a hard habit gnawing those nails can be to break. Come on now!!! Who really cares if you eat chocolate, bite your nails, or crack your knuckles?..well except mom. These are useless habits and they don't effect anyone. I admit that the smoking one is a good example of a resolution but that's about it! I think that the whole New Year's Resolution thing should be banned or just done on a voluntary basis. It's like you are expected to try to break those bad habits, those routine things in your life. New Year's Resolutions have gotta go. I say be optimistic. Look towards the future not at your past. Look to see what accomplishments you can make, not the failures you left behind in 1997. '98 is a clean slate, Make the best of the new year as you can. Well...Cheryl will still have to wake up without a blanket most mornings but... I'm going on a trip with her this year because it's going to be healthy for both of us...got any good suggestions on a romantic destination? Send em to me here at healthquest.
