Amazing how research is done so piecemeal. One day you read how a vitamin or mineral or in this case fish oils are good for one condition and later read about for another yet neither study talks about the other benefits. This recent study from the Rollins School of Public Health shows it is beneficial for the baby if their mother took fish oil during the pregnancy. In this study they looked at DHA which is one half of the omega 3 partners EPA & DHA in fish oil. The data studied showed less colds and less severe symptoms in those babies whose mothers took fish oil.

We have been recommending fish oil for pregnant mom’s to improve development of the baby’s brain and nervous system for many years before it became more popular to do so.  In fact we recommend the Super Fishy Lube liquid or capsules to dads and brothers and sisters and Grandma and Grandpa too. All of us can and will benefit from the health promoting effects of the fish oils. The 2 main fatty acids found in cold water fish are EPA and DHA and they are determined to be EFA’s or essential fatty acids. They are essential because we cannot manufacture them in our bodies but must get them from our diet. The main source of these in the diet are the fish that come from cold waters like salmon, cod etc.

EPA helps decrease inflammation and improve blood flow so is then helpful for arthritis and heart/circulation. One of my teachers in neurology who is a former Neurologist and head of a department at Mayo clinic gave me the advice to make sure anyone who has Alzheimers or Parkinsons disease in the family to start taking Fish Oils and continue this habit rest of their lives. This is because the omega 3 fatty acids EPA/DHA have been shown to reduce your chances of getting these brain/nervous system diseases. Also for any of my patients who have heart arthymias I suggest they take a high quality concentrate of EPA/DHA which is in the triglyceride form like it is naturally when you eat fish. This form is more absorbable and more effective than the ester form of fish oils after they are processed and is the form of most of the fish oils sold. The EPA/DHA was discovered to help the heart’s electrical system be more flexible and resilient and decreased heart attacks by more than 50 percent in the study group that was taking these essential fatty acids from fish.

DHA seems to help more with memory and nerve tissues while EPA helps with depression and inflammation which I mentioned above. Bottom line is that as a clinical nutritionist I consider the healthy fish oils to be one of our most important supplements to our daily eating. My wife doesn’t like fish and many of my patients don’t either but both my wife and patients can take 1 tsp. of the lemon tasting liquid Fishy lube or 2 capsules.
