Recently I gave up coffee for 2 weeks just to prove to myself that I could! Since I have the personal opinions and belief that coffee has some inherent health benefits…I feel vindicated once again that my vice of enjoying coffee is proving even more to be part of my healthy choices.

A recent study published in The Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease has shown that the drinking of coffee by mice improves memory in those already experiencing the symptoms of Alzheimer’s. Important to note here is that it is caffeinated coffee that produces these memory benefits. Prior studies already have shown that coffee drinking decreases the risk for developing Alzheimer’s so with that being said…other than my 2 weeks abstinence from coffee I should be protected for life by the amount of coffee I have drank over the past years. It is again so interesting to me that it is the stuff from mother nature which is so protective and also therapeutic.
According to USF neuroscientist Dr. Chuanhai Cao, lead author of the study “Caffeinated coffee provides a natural increase in blood GCSF levels,”. “The exact way that this occurs is not understood as are many of the effects and side effects of drugs. Of course the pharmaceutical companies would love to isolate the chemical from mother nature’s breast and patent it for prescriptions of $big dollar profits. The only problem the drug companies have is that mother nature has created these naturally occurring chemicals in complex combinations that occur in the coffee beans in this instance and we are still discovering these with many more yet undiscovered. So when drugs are made from the most active single chemical found in the coffee bean for example there are many side effects which occur. Maybe it is true that you can’t fool with Mother Nature and get away without a whole list of side effects. Well I think I will go enjoy my second cup of coffee today….hmmm Caribou or Paul Newmans…now that is the question.
